Children in Read 2020
Now in its sixth year, the annual Children In Read auction has just been launched.
The auction is of signed books and items, donated by celebrated Authors and Illustrators from around the world. From Philip Pullman to Nigella Lawson, every age and genre is covered. Bidding is open for two months and all proceeds go to Children in Need. The winning bid for each book receives a signed (and often dedicated if requested) copy from the author.
This year it includes a new local writer, whom you might know. If you or your child has ever been taught by Mrs Golden (Miss Colbran if you were around in the 90s) then you may be interested to hear that she has recently launched a new career as a Children’s Author.
Her own life is a bit like a storybook; following her student years in Cambridge she has worked as a Community Artist in Salford, taught in Switzerland, then spent time experiencing life all around the world, including with the Native Americans, in the Caribbean, Mexico and the Amazonian rainforests of Ecuador, in Thailand, Taiwan and the Indian subcontinent. In the late 80s she returned to Britain, trained as a Permaculture Designer and settled in Todmorden. Since then she has worked as a Supply Teacher all around the valley
In the classroom, she used many of her life experiences to augment and ‘bring alive’ the curriculum, inspiring children to love nature and enjoy the beauty and excitement of the world ‘out there’. Now she is opening this love to a wider audience of children and adults through her writing.
‘A Tree in Time’ is the first of a series of time travel books which challenges the usual preconceptions that Stone Age people were white, unintelligent or ‘savage’.
Pam tells us more about the book; "People lived for four millennia in Britain and hardly left a mark to show they had been here. Jenni, a twenty first century child, is magically transported back this period. Brought up by her mother to appreciate the natural world, rather than the technological trappings of this century, she discovers a time when nature and the earth was all there was. A fascinating journey into the lives of the Mesolithic people, the story helps the reader to explore an era when humans lived by hunting and gathering and worshipped the earth and nature for what it provided."
One Amazon reviewer says; "Pam has obviously done a lot of research for this book and brings it to life superbly. The book works on many levels and seems to be as popular with adults as it is with children. Its concept is (as far as I'm aware) unique. If you're looking for something other than wizards, dragons and teenage angst in your teenage fiction, I highly recommend giving "A Tree in Time" a go."
If you would like to read "A Tree in Time" it is available from The Bookcase in Hebden Bridge, Todmorden Tourist Information office and (from October) Lyall’s bookshop in Todmorden. It can also be bought online from Amazon in paperback and as an e-book. Or you can place a bid in the Children in Read auction - www.jumblebee.co.uk/childreninread2020, Lot 73 in the Fantasy section.
